Includes Excerpts from Previous Emails

When I first sat down to write The Emperor’s Dragon I wasn’t sure what I was trying to do. I’d recently finished a Survey on Gothic Literature and, as a college student at the time, was really interested in current events and politics. I was also about to graduate and wasn’t sure what I was going to do after college. Many of my friends were either applying to grad school or planning to move back home. I instead started fiddling with an idea for a book series.

My first draft was the worst! I absolutely hated it. It sounded like a research paper trying to describe things in a schedule book and the cover was so confused. But it took getting through that entire first draft to figure out what I was trying to get at. It was around that time a mutual friend put me in touch with an amazing editor–Audie Jinks–and she asked me what the book was about.

Since then we’ve gone through hundreds of pages together, reworking and smoothing things out. It’s literally become a whole new book. But I still remember that first email about that first draft.

It’s been a few years and goodness knows we’ve probably changed every word from that original draft (including the title!) but that original email answering “So what’s the story about?” still applies equally today.
